Couplings: Choosing the Choicest Couplings
Couplings are used to connect pipes or shafts. Couplings come in all sorts of sizes, styles, and are made of a wide range of materials. There are several things to consider when choosing these seemingly simple pieces of equipment:

1) Temperature and environment. Any coupling you choose will need to be flexible enough to handle the two different temperatures without buckling. If the pipes or shafts will be exposed to moisture or the elements, you will need to find couplings that can withstand these conditions without loosening or cracking.
2) Motion and rigor of use. Flexible couplings will be better able to withstand motion, shifting, and hard usage over a period of time. Industrial-grade couplings that have metal springs or rubber components are expensive but help ensure that the couplings can withstand high levels of movement without breaks or fractures.
3) Sealing. In some cases, leaks can pose a serious problem. Couplings need to be airtight or need to be treated to ensure a proper seal that does not permit any leaks.
