Metal Forming: A Series of Processes
Metal forming includes processes such as casting, forging, stamping and machining and is a way of changing the shapes of molten and solid metals. It is used in the manufacture of metal products and in factories that create sheet metal and metal components. Most metal products are created through a metal forming process at some point. Among the more popular forms of metal forming are punching, notching, and press braking. In punching, metal is shaped by the use of a puncher, which is aligned to deliver specific pressure to the metal. In notching, metal is removed from an edge or part of the metal sheet. In press braking, a press is used to dent, cut, or curl metal in one punch or press.

In a metal forming technique called embossing, metal is impressed with a raised or design or pattern, usually by being pressed between a die or cast. This metal forming process can be used to place logos or pictures on sheet metal, or it can be used to give metal an attractive pattern. A metal forming process called shearing is used to cut metal perpendicularly. It is often used to create sheet metal or cut sheet metal, in preparation for embossing or other metal forming processes. In a metal forming process called blanking, metal is cut into specific shapes.
