Resistors: The Right Resistors for the Job
Resistors are little electronic devices that resist the flow of electrical currents. There are several types of resistors, including adjustable resistors or potentiometers, temperature variable resistors, photo resistors, and temperature variable resistors. Adjustable resistors can be adjusted, as their name suggests, in order to allow more or less current to flow through. Temperature variable resistors change the resistance to electric current in response to temperature. Photo resistors change resistance in response to the amount of light that hits the resistors. And fixed value resistors have the same amount of resistance in all conditions.

There are different components among resistors. Carbon composition resistors are made from carbon powder and a phenolic binder that are coated with a sealant or insulation. Carbon film resistors are made by putting a thin carbon film on ceramic forms or rods. Metal film resistors are made by placing a specially treated metal film on a ceramic rod or form. The ends of the ceramic rod are usually plated or covered for low noise. These resistors are very widely used in everything from computers, calculators, stereos, meters, and military equipment. Wire-wound resistors are made by winding thin metal into coils around a ceramic rod or shape. These resistors are often used in measuring equipment and in high current circuits.
