| Winches: What are Winches? |
Winches are devices or heavy machines used for hoisting or raising. In their simplest forms, winches are small devices that attach to a car and are used to attach something that you wish to tow. Tow trucks use larger winches to tow cars. Very large winches are used with helicopters or other large machinery. Winches can be used to lower or raise large weights or loads, or can be used to drag these weights or loads at angles or along the ground. Winches are a key part of many types of heavy equipment that are used for lifting.
Winches are not as closely regulated as other lifting and hosting devices, so it is important to buy them from reputable manufacturers and use them carefully. In general, buying a larger and stronger winch than you think necessary will help ensure that you have enough power to hoist or lift the weight you need. Secondly, it is advisable to buy winches with brakes, if possible, as this helps ensure safety and control while winching. It is also a wise precaution to hoist smaller loads first and only slowly and gradually increase pressure and weight on a winch, so that no parts of the machinery snap off. Always avoid putting the maximum pressure that a manufacturer suggests for a winch. When using a winch, stand well away from the area where a load is being lifted and advise that others do so, as well. If a winch snaps or breaks, anyone within a small distance of the winch can be seriously injured.
